Spring Cleaning: Is It Time For A Detox?

by Emily Dickerson, ND

Are you dragging? Not quite as healthy as you “used to be”? Do you ever wish you could hit the “reset button” on your body’s health? A detox program might be exactly what the doctor ordered. Whether you are a generally healthy individual wanting to clean out unwanted bodily toxins and chemicals in order to reach a higher level of optimal health, or you are someone dealing with the effects of chronic illness, we have a program for most everyone.

Detoxification is an Important Process

Detoxification occurs throughout the cells of the body. There are three phases of detoxification, all of which need to be working effectively. Detoxification can be impaired for multiple reasons, including an overload of chemicals and toxins within the cells of the body. Toxins are everywhere, including in our air, water, soil, and food. This exposure is a part of daily life, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we can do about it. Boise’s inversion and resultant poor winter air quality can be reason enough alone to pursue an effective detoxification program.

Symptoms

Pollutants and chemicals found in our environment have the potential to build up in our bodily systems and cause symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and frequent infections. And these are only the initial symptoms! If this “environmental overload” continues, there is potential for chronic impact on our endocrine (hormone) organs, such as the thyroid. Detox protocols can help to improve not only the above symptoms, but also muscle and body pain, irritable mood, trouble sleeping, poor digestion, and skin conditions such as acne. At the end of the detox program you are likely to feel happier, healthier, more energized, and you might just lose weight!

Supervision is Important

As a naturopathic physician, I feel that detoxification support should be part of everyone’s routine, at least once per year. Science-based detoxification protocols can be an important part of your health routine for optimal health.  Because many issues and questions can come up, it is important to have a healthcare provider assist you and monitor your health throughout this process, as doing it alone can be challenging and sometimes dangerous.

At Boise Natural Health we Have Options

Individual 10-day intensive detox program aimed at helping people detoxify efficiently. This program will be conducted on an individual basis, and is intended for generally healthy individuals that need to hit the “reset button” on their health and body. It is best used by people that do not have a chronic illness and that can tolerate a more intensive detox regimen.

28-day program with weekly support group meetings is a gentler, yet longer detoxification protocol aimed at helping those that are chronically ill to detoxify their systems and achieve overall improvement in health. This is an excellent program for those suffering from fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue, or any other chronic illness that impairs an individual’s ability to achieve optimal health. The next group cleanse will start May 1, 2017 – Click here for more information.

To determine which detox protocol is best for you, please complete a Metabolic Detoxification Questionnaire.  A number higher than 50 indicates that the 28 day program may be the best option. If you are not sure, Dr. Dickerson can help you determine the best fit for you.
